Nguyen and Way’s collaboration starts as a translation project through which one translates the other through a language they do not understand. They present an excerpt of narrative writing drawn onto the gallery wall, which is written and translated back-and-forth between Chinese, Vietnamese, and English, allowing meaning, which exists beyond text, to surface through the process. This approach to translation extends into their respective and shared sculptural and installation practices, where boundaries of authorship and ownership are deliberately obscured.

Both the narrative works and installation explore themes of personal and collective histories, and cultural taboo. The works oscillate from playful or juvenile contexts to revealing the underlying violence embedded into objects and their surroundings. Each piece holds a particular relationship to labor—from delicate, exacting gestures, to forms that require endurance, to an engagement with inherited or invisible systems of work.
